Carbone cancer center’s Community Outreach and Engagement program has embraced the “Wisconsin Idea” –that the work of the University should have a positive impact on the people of the state, and beyond. Our Center has a long and unique history of community outreach and engagement ranging from the Wisconsin Cancer Council, established in 1980 by Dr. Paul Carbone-a statewide approach to cancer control,to faculty and staff conducting engaging research that incorporates the talents and interests of the people of Wisconsin.
Community Health Disparities Initiative (CHDI)
In recent decades, screening and treatments for cancer have improved, and deaths due to cancer have decreased. But unfortunately, not all Americans benefit equally from these successes. Many groups in Wisconsin and nationwide – often defined by where they live, by their income, race, ethnicity, education or sexual orientation – experience a greater burden of cancer along the continuum from prevention to detection, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, to end-of life.
We work with communities, researchers and clinicians across Wisconsin to improve the health of everyone who faces greater cancer risk through outreach, education, and community-based participatory research.
Outreach
We provide cancer prevention centered outreach and education to all communities across Wisconsin. This includes presentations, trainings, events throughout the state that educate and advocate for cancer research and information.

Wisconsin Cancer Collaborative
UW Carbone Cancer Center is home to the Wisconsin Cancer Collaborative. The Wisconsin Cancer Collaborative is a statewide coalition of approximately 150 organizations working together to reduce the burden of cancer for everyone in Wisconsin. The Collaborative works to develop, implement and promote a statewide approach to cancer control via a State Cancer Plan. Additionally, the Collaborate aims to connect members with the tools, support, and knowledge they need to create healthier communities.
C-POD
The Cancer Prevention and Outcomes Data (C-POD) Shared resource provides data dissemination services to researchers at Carbone Cancer Center. Providing high impact data on the burden of cancer in Wisconsin, facilitates high-impact population health science and transitional research among researchers from the Carbone Cancer Center and the broader UW Campus.
